EDH Fantastic Five: Green

This week I’ll be continuing my EDH Fantastic Five series focusing on the “color of abundance”. Whether it be land, non-creature removal, or big beaters, green is a color most welcomed in any EDH deck that can manage to fit it in. Green utility comes in many forms and can sometimes mean the difference between a quick win or a slow torturous loss. With this in mind I will now introduce my top 5 picks for utility in Green.

(in no particular order)

Tooth and Nail

Cost: 5GG (entwine 2)

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Creature Tutor

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drop your two biggest beaters on the field at once? Or maybe you are more of the Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker / Pestermite combo type. Well, look no further, this is your bread and butter. “But Trey” you might say, “it costs 7-9 mana to cast!, THAT’S OUTRAGEOUS!” to which I’d reply “ Dear child, this is EDH and if you are running Tooth and Nail, you are also running ramp.” “But Trey, aren’t there more useful and cheaper spells to run instead?” No, no, no aaaaannndddd no, until you’ve had someone drop an Avenger of Zendikar and a Craterhoof Behemoth in one turn (with Anger in the graveyard) and swing at you for 192 life… you just won’t understand…..moving on….

Sylvan Library

Cost: 1G

Type: Enchantment

Purpose: Card Advantage

A two mana enchantment that lets you dig 2 extra cards deep per turn and keep any number of them for 4 life a piece? Yes please? Card advantage is good… card advantage in green is great… raw card advantage for life in EDH is amazing. This card lets you dig and dig until you’ve found your answers it’s def an auto-include.

Eternal Witness

Cost: 1GG

Type: Creature

Purpose: Recursion

At first look this card is very “Ok cool I get a card back from the graveyard.” At deeper inspection and with much applied usage it becomes “Holy cow, why would I not have this in my deck?” In EDH recursion is an irreplaceable tool due to singleton decks. Along with a consistent source of bounce (Conjuror’s Closet, Erratic Portal, Crystal Shard) and an extra turn spell (most commonly Time Warp) this card is key to infinite turns. Who doesn’t like to take extra turns?

 Acidic Slime

Cost: 3GG

Type: Creature

Purpose: Removal on a Creature

Very easily stated this guy hits the battlefield and wreaks havoc. In EDH it is very important to have creatures that do other things…especially when they destroy a pesky Maze of Ith, Sylvan Library, or Mimic Vat.

Skyshroud Claim

Cost: 3G

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Land Ramp

Search for two Forest cards and put them into play” that means untapped and it fetches dual and shock lands. Land ramp doesn’t get much better than that.

Honorable Mentions:

Natural Order, Oracle of Mul Daya, Avenger of Zendikar, Woodfall Primus, Craterhoof Behemoth
