EDH Fantastic Five: Red

Continuing my series on EDH brings us to what I believe are the top five staples in the more passionate and unstable area of the color pie. I personally don’t play red often, but have found myself at its mercy on a regular basis. The very chaotic nature of red is often its most valuable asset and the chagrin of many an opponent. With no further gilding of the lily…the top five for red!

(in no particular order)

Chaos Warp

Cost: 2R

Type: Instant

Purpose: Permanent spot removal

The most effective spot removal in the color, and for the small downside of a random free permanent (usually land in my experience), it even gets rid of commanders! The instant speed allows for an escape from sticky situations during an opponent’s turn. This card belongs in EDH which is probably why it was included in the Commander’s Arsenal.

Blasphemous Act

Cost: 8R

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: BOAAAAAARRRRDDDDD WIIIIPE!!!!

Good news: Thirteen damage will render almost any creature short of a Serra Avatar to ash. Better news: this bad boy hits every creature on the field…(Suck it hexproof and shroud!) Best news: I don’t want to blow your mind or anything…. but it gets cheaper with each additional creature present on the battlefield…eight creatures means you can have the board clear for the insane low price of a single red mana!!!! (let’s see Wrath of God pull that off you white weenies!) Just make sure you don’t cast it while a stuffy doll with your name on it is out or else you are taking thirteen to the face! And nobody likes that kind of punishment….

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Cost: 2RR

Type: Legendary Creature

Purpose: ….non-legendary creature copier…sigh….

If I had named this guy I wouldn’t be able to type it here due to the pg-13 restrictions I try to adhere to…that being said, he’s by far one of the most brutal creatures that red brings to the table. Wizards pretty much said. “Yo, dawg I heard you like copying creatures and hate blue so here’s a creature to copy your creatures!” Throw a Pestermite in the mix and you have infinite 1/4s with which to beat your opponents senseless. I don’t feel the need to demonstrate what he can do with an Acidic Slime or a Woodfall Primus. I’ve saved the best for last…. this guy is a candidate for the lead role in your commander deck…. How stupidly broken is that?

Insurrection

Cost: 5RRR

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Proving that for one turn their creatures can like you better.

“Those sure are nice creatures…it would be a shame if something were to happen to them…” “Oh hey new friends! Sic em!” There is absolutely nothing better than using someone else’s creatures as a tool for their own demise. The demoralization thrust upon them at that moment is like a kick to the groin. Oh…and did I forget to mention…it takes ALL opponents’ creatures and gives them haste. “Yes, I’ll take “ instant army” for eight , Alex.”

Anger

Cost: 3R

Type: Creature

Purpose: HASTEEEEEEEE!

A 2/2 for four with haste….when he’s in the graveyard all creatures get haste…a combo piece that comes in quite handy when you are able to drop an Avenger of Zendikar and a Craterhoof Behemoth on the field with a Tooth and Nail (read “no, I will not allow you to prepare for my onslaught.”) what’s not to love??? I don’t know who doesn’t love to attack for a bajillion damage.

Honorable Mentions:

Blood Moon, Jokulhaups, Shattering Pulse, Wild Ricochet, Wheel of Fortune

EDH Fantastic Five: Green

This week I’ll be continuing my EDH Fantastic Five series focusing on the “color of abundance”. Whether it be land, non-creature removal, or big beaters, green is a color most welcomed in any EDH deck that can manage to fit it in. Green utility comes in many forms and can sometimes mean the difference between a quick win or a slow torturous loss. With this in mind I will now introduce my top 5 picks for utility in Green.

(in no particular order)

Tooth and Nail

Cost: 5GG (entwine 2)

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Creature Tutor

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drop your two biggest beaters on the field at once? Or maybe you are more of the Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker / Pestermite combo type. Well, look no further, this is your bread and butter. “But Trey” you might say, “it costs 7-9 mana to cast!, THAT’S OUTRAGEOUS!” to which I’d reply “ Dear child, this is EDH and if you are running Tooth and Nail, you are also running ramp.” “But Trey, aren’t there more useful and cheaper spells to run instead?” No, no, no aaaaannndddd no, until you’ve had someone drop an Avenger of Zendikar and a Craterhoof Behemoth in one turn (with Anger in the graveyard) and swing at you for 192 life… you just won’t understand…..moving on….

Sylvan Library

Cost: 1G

Type: Enchantment

Purpose: Card Advantage

A two mana enchantment that lets you dig 2 extra cards deep per turn and keep any number of them for 4 life a piece? Yes please? Card advantage is good… card advantage in green is great… raw card advantage for life in EDH is amazing. This card lets you dig and dig until you’ve found your answers it’s def an auto-include.

Eternal Witness

Cost: 1GG

Type: Creature

Purpose: Recursion

At first look this card is very “Ok cool I get a card back from the graveyard.” At deeper inspection and with much applied usage it becomes “Holy cow, why would I not have this in my deck?” In EDH recursion is an irreplaceable tool due to singleton decks. Along with a consistent source of bounce (Conjuror’s Closet, Erratic Portal, Crystal Shard) and an extra turn spell (most commonly Time Warp) this card is key to infinite turns. Who doesn’t like to take extra turns?

 Acidic Slime

Cost: 3GG

Type: Creature

Purpose: Removal on a Creature

Very easily stated this guy hits the battlefield and wreaks havoc. In EDH it is very important to have creatures that do other things…especially when they destroy a pesky Maze of Ith, Sylvan Library, or Mimic Vat.

Skyshroud Claim

Cost: 3G

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Land Ramp

Search for two Forest cards and put them into play” that means untapped and it fetches dual and shock lands. Land ramp doesn’t get much better than that.

Honorable Mentions:

Natural Order, Oracle of Mul Daya, Avenger of Zendikar, Woodfall Primus, Craterhoof Behemoth

EDH Fantastic Five: White

For the next few articles I’ve decided to introduce what I consider to be the top five staples in Commander/EDH for each color. The candidates chosen are based on my experiences with utility in the format, and represent what I think every commander deck running the respective colors should not be caught without. For those that may disagree with some of my choices… awesome… that is what makes EDH a great format, your choices are unlimited and the format lends itself (and encourages) you to use those insanely niche or hard to understand cards that you might not find appropriate for other formats.(Yes, I’m talking about YOU, Omen Machine and Knowledge Pool.)

(in no particular order)

Path to Exile / Swords to Plowshares

Cost: W

Type: Instant

Purpose: Creature Spot removal

Quite possibly the best spot removal in the game, short of commanders, the removal is permanent, and we love permanent removal, no more Woodfall Primus ETB effects, say goodbye to your Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker (yes, I still hate that guy with a fiery passion) combos. The downsides of these two are the life given to an opponent from plowshares and the land given to them from Path… Prices I am more than willing to pay to rid myself of troublesome creatures.

Serra Ascendant

Cost: W

Type: Creature – Human Monk

Purpose: Extremely cheap beater with lifelink

Disclaimer: Most often referred to as a “Jackass Move” If you choose to play this card on turn one, people will hate you…forever. That being said…

A one cost 6/6 with lifelink on turn one…

Austere Command

Cost: 4WW

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Utility board wipe

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been able to use Austere Command’s abilities to turn the board state around. The utility of this card is absolutely amazing. There is nothing so great as hearing “*sigh* REALLY?” after wiping the field when one guy is clearly cruising to victory with a loaded board of artifacts and/or enchantments and/or beaters… pure bliss. This card is also great for politics, one guy has beaters and the other has artifacts? Who’s help will benefit you in the long run… smite Player B’s board in exchange for favors or Player A’s Board so Player B can attack in and deal the death blow to player A… OR Wipe both boards, making enemies of both while laughing hysterically and praying that your deck manages to muster answers for the wrath you’ve just brought down upon your own head. The potential is limitless!

Enlightened Tutor

Cost: W

Type: Instant

Purpose: Fetching utility artifacts when you need them most.

Who doesn’t like a good tutor? Any hands? Didn’t think so… Enlightened Tutor is amazing to fetch up staples like Sol Ring and Sensei’s Divining Top or combo pieces like Blasting Station, Lightning Greaves to protect your commander, or an equipment to lay waste to a foe.

Wrath of God

Cost: 2WW

Type: Sorcery

Purpose: Board Wipe

Not much to say, one of the best wipes ever. Kill all creatures they can’t regen. It’s awesome.

Honorable Mentions:

Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Prison Term, Oblivion Ring, Karmic Guide, Iona, Shield of Emeria
